If you are missing the sight of the yellow cow that used to greet you at Udder Delights in Hahndorf, don’t despair! The cow and the amazing cheeses are now just down the road at Grünthal Brew, along with great food, craft beer, wine, gin that can all be enjoyed in this family-friendly venue.

We visited on a wet day and were delighted to find a fireplace doing a great job of keeping the space warm and cosy, surrounded by couches. The main dining area, ‘The Great Hall’, includes tables, booths, bar tables, and also offers the ‘Grünthal Greenhouse’ for private functions.

The menu at Grünthal is definitely a step up from standard brewery fare! There are a great range of small plates, pizzas, and specials on offer. Udder Delights cheeses are well represented, with a delicious cheese fondue, a ‘Too Cheesy’ deep dish pizza, and even the humble toastie is made with Truffle Cheddar. We enjoyed a pizza, fried chicken and mac and cheese for the little ones, and a delectable cheese board. The real star of the menu for the kids was the dessert (of course) – an extra special sundae topped with Persian fairy floss.

The menu offers dietary options including vegetarian, dairy free, gluten free and vegan.
For the grown ups, there is an extensive drinks menu including tea, coffee and iced drinks, wines, three varieties of Grünthal Gin, cocktails and mocktails, and of course the Grünthal beer range.
Grünthal makes it easy to cater for groups with a “Feed my Group”, “Feed my Party” and “Feed my Child” with a great selection of items from the main menu.

The rain stopped after lunch allowing us to explore the fantastic lawns on the bank of the Onkaparinga River. There is seating and shade on the raised terrace, and the lawns are accessible by both a ramp and stairs. We can’t think of a better place to lay down a picnic rug and enjoy a sunny afternoon watching the kids play on the wooden climbing frame, in the sandpit, or of course posing with the big yellow cow.

Before you depart, be sure to choose some gin, beer or wine to take home, and of course some of the many cheeses and trimmings on offer.

The indoor dining area is accessible with plenty of space to manoeuvre around tables and park prams. The female toilets allow enough room to leave a pram outside the cubicle door if required, and the accessible toilet is very roomy and has a full size change table, nappy disposal unit, and grab rails around the toilet.

Ingenuity Baby Base seats are available to seat your little ones at the table – just another extra touch that makes this family day out so much easier.

  • Of all of the wineries we have visited this year? Kimbolton has had the most on offer for kids and families, and we just love this place to bits. From the shady lawn games and kids welcome baskets, to the massive hand they played in the regions 'Grapes for Good' initiative, come take a look at our recent visit. Less than an hour away from the Adelaide CBD lies the Langhorne Creek wine region. Where is Langhorne Creek? Glad you asked. Just a little past Strathalbyn and you will find this fantastic area filled with some breathtaking, often quieter spots to explore. You'd be forgiven for thiking this is Adelaide Hills, it actually falls into Fleurieu Peninsula, but is located between Adelaide Hills and Lake Alexandrina. Built in December 2018, directly on top of the vineyard, Kimbolton is a fun yet sophisticated venue made from shipping containers! Giving you the feel of being right amongst the vines, with a terrific deck up top and opening windows where you can sit and eat cheese and drink wine until your heart is content (or your belly is full….either or). There are two seperate grassed, shady, areas at the cellar door with a…

  • The Berri Hotel Bistro is another large attractive venue serving from a significant and contemporary menu. You can't go too wrong with a pub meal when you're on holidays and you'll find plenty of pub favourites at the Berri Hotel, along with some new options. Located on Riverview Drive in the heart of Berri, you'll never be too far from the Berri Hotel while exploring this popular Riverland destination. During our visit, the Berri Hotel had that nice "buzz" about it - it was certainly busy, however the staff had everything running well and we didn't need to wait too long to order or get our food. The menu really is extensive - you'll find everything from entrees, to salads, pub classics, seasonal mains, pizza, a kid's menu, lunch specials and a some great dessert options. After much deliberation over the menu, we enjoyed the Crispy Thai Beef and Spicy Wild Prawn salads. Our youngest predictably had the kids schnitzel but our eldest enjoyed a large loaded hot dog. The kids meals are only $10, which is great value! They are not only open for lunch and dinner - you can have breakfast at the Berri Hotel too, with the…
