Ready Steady Go Kids – Tennis – practicing volleys

The Ready Steady Go Kids program is physio-designed and teaches the fundamentals of 10 different sports and develops essential motor skills in a fun, non-competitive environment. Each class is run indoors for 30-45 minutes (depending on age group) and covers 5 sports per term.

Julie’s 4 year old son had a trial class at Morphettville recently and he LOVED the tennis session! The coaches are a lot of fun, which makes the whole thing really enjoyable for the kids. But they also learn the fundamentals of the sports while having fun! In tennis the kids practiced volleys, forehands and (the fave) serving which involved a clever use of hitting a ball off a velcro’d string – the kids thought that was awesome! We love that Ready Steady Go Kids get to learn a new sport every few weeks, which means they are trialing a range of sports, learning a lot of basic skills and working out which ones they really love rather than doing the same things week in, week out.

Tennis – learning to serve!

Classes are designed to focus on a specific gross motor, hand-eye/foot-eye and/or balance activity to complement the sport component and the program structure is repeated each week so kids become familiar and comfortable with the routine.

“While the kids just loved the whole thing and are obviously having a super fun time, it was also great to see a real focus on building skill fundamentals” – Julie – Kids in Adelaide

The program’s objectives are to

  • Introduce preschoolers to a variety of sports in a structured, safe, inclusive and non-competitive environment.
  • Show preschoolers that sport and physical activity are fun, thus developing a lifelong passion for exercise.
  • Develop and enhance age-appropriate gross motor skills, coordination and correct posture.
  • Introduce and reinforce the importance of warm-up and stretching to help prevent injuries, and proper hydration.
  • Teach the importance of good sportsmanship and teamwork.
  • Decrease childhood obesity.
  • Increase each child’s confidence.
  • Prepare children for school and participation in the broader community.

The instructor to student ratio is kept low so that all kids receive a high level of attention and can be supported where needed. In our recent class, there were 2 coaches and only 7 kids so all the kids had lots of opportunity to practice all aspects of the skills. There was no time for ‘getting bored while waiting your turn’, because the kids were participating in a range of activities the whole time! All coaches have (as a minimum) a Level 1 Coaching qualification under the National Coaching Accreditation Scheme from the Australian Sports Commission, a current working with children check and extensive experience in teaching preschool-aged children. (The ones we met were also super FUN!)

Ready Steady Go Kids encourage parent participation in their classes too and the parents love it just as much as the kids! It’s so great when you can have fun and be active together. The kids in our session were on the go the whole class, with some parents participating at the start, but by the end the kids were happily enjoying the tennis skills and awesome obstacle course on their own.

Ready Steady Go Kids run classes each term and you can join at any time. Find your nearest class and sign up for a trial class at their website www.readysteadygokids.com.au
